BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: The Story Tellers 1

The BBC SSO's Glasgow season continues with an evening of musical storytelling, conducted by Stefan Solyom. Dvorák's Symphonic Poem 'The Noonday Witch' is followed by Rimsky-Korsakov's lushly exotic 'Scheherazade'. Violinist Viviane Hagner completes the programme with a performance of Szymanowski's fiendishly difficult 'Violin Concerto No 1'.

Mikhail Agrest conducts a performance of Mieczyslaw Karlowicz's passionate Violin Concerto with soloist Tasmin Little, who has recorded the work with the BBC SSO. Visual art is the inspiration for Respighi's 'Trittico Botticelliano' and Mussorgsky's ever-popular 'Pictures at an Exhibition' (orchestrated by Ravel). Glinka's Overture 'A Life for the Tsar' completes the programme. A Pre-Concert Prelude takes place at 6.45pm and in the Post-Concert Coda Tasmin Little performs a short violin recital.

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra: The Symphonic Collection 3

Conductor Stefan Solyom opens the concert in the Cornwall of Arthurian legend with Bax's Symphonic Poem 'Tintagel'. Eminent French pianist Jean-Philippe Collard performs Mozart's Piano Concerto No 23 in A major, and Sibelius' majestic Symphony No 5 brings the evening to a triumphant finish. Solyom discusses storytelling and music with Anthony Sayer in a Pre-Concert Prelude at 6.45pm, and after the concert Collard performs piano works by Ravel.

Ilan Volkov conducts the Scottish premiere of 'Speakings', a major new piece by the BBC SSO's Composer in Association, Jonathan Harvey, renowned for his brilliant and imaginative combinations of electronic and traditional instruments. Also on the programme is Bruckner's Symphony No 9, which he hadn't completed by the time of his death. A Pre-Concert Prelude takes place at 6.45pm, and Harvey's 'Other Presences' is performed in a Post-Concert Coda by Mark O'Keefe.
