Alice in Wonderland 2D
Date Location
(2 stars) A sequel of sorts that takes in elements of both Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through The Looking Glass', this finds Alice (Wasikowska) as a teenager returning to Underland, which has long since fallen into the tyrannical grip of the Red Queen (Bonham Carter). Dark and visually arresting, yet not quite as emotionally involving as Burton's very best work.

Annie Hall
Date Location
Two decades before 'Sex And The City' had its first orgasm, 'Annie Hall' was laying bare the mores of modern, urban romance to devastating effect while also zoning in on the specific psyche of Allen Konigsberg: anti-Semitic paranoia, metaphysical angst, the search for true love. There's a highly charged on-screen electricity between Allen and Keaton, glorious vistas of the old New York and hilarious set pieces - Alvy fighting with lobsters, the scene of his childhood home below the…

Astro Boy
Date Location
(2 stars) A popular manga in Japan since 1952, and a cult TV show in the US since the early 1980s, Astro Boy makes a bid for worldwide domination in this flashy but flatly realised animation. A robot child cloned by Dr Tenma (voiced by Cage) from the DNA of his dead son, the titular space age Pinocchio (Highmore), is rejected by his father and banished to the robot graveyard that surrounds the city.

Avatar 3D
Date Location
(3 stars) Set in 2154, Cameron's much-hyped 'Avatar' focuses on a paraplegic marine named Jake Sully (Worthington), who arrives on the distant moon of Pandora with a mission to help displace its indigenous population. But, after winning their trust, Jake finds his allegiances gradually shifting. High on technical flair but short on storytelling ambition, this visually stunning sci-fi epic sadly remains deeply flawed.

Case 39
Date Location
(2 stars) Zellweger plays a social worker who adopts a malevolent girl with the ability to use her victims' worst fears to terrify them to death. While creditably avoiding the usual supernatural trappings, Alvart's unwise positioning of the story within a social work context makes 'Case 39' both ludicrous and morally dubious.

(2 stars) Based on Anne Fontaine's French drama 'Nathalie', Egoyan has relocated this tale of a middle-aged woman, who is worried that she may no longer be desirable to her husband and decides to pay a prostitute to test his fidelity, to Toronto. Ferris Bueller's Day Off

A sunny Spring day in Chicago is far too good to spend locked in a classroom so the irrepressible Ferris Bueller feigns a malady, cuts classes and promises his two best friends a day to remember. Characteristically Hughes teen comedy that scores with fresh dialogue and appealing characterisations, but has the drawback of some laboured farce and the need to make meaningful statements.

Green Zone
Date Location
(4 stars) This very adult thriller dissects the lies that were told to enable and maintain the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Adapted from Rajiv Chandrasekaran's brilliant 2007 non-fiction book 'Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone', this is a brave and intelligent attempt to engage with a very recent history and its implications of governmental abuse of all of us. Muscular, sexless and deterministic filmmaking - undoubtedly the best thing Greengrass has done to date.
