The Baader Meinhof Complex
Date Location
Based on the Stefan Aust's 'Der Spiegel', this is a compelling and engrossing attempt to explain the trajectory and the political position of arguably the most incoherent post-war European terrorist group - The Red Army Faction. Intelligently adapted, the film chronicles the personal and political progressions of gang members Andreas Baader ( Bleibtreu), Ulrike Meinhof (Gedeck) and crucially Gudrun Ensslin (Wokalek). A strong, thought-provoking political thriller.

Bicycle Thieves
Date Location
An unemployed Italian workman has his bicycle stolen, and badly needs it for a new job, so he and his small son search the busy streets of Rome for it. The best-loved and most famous film to emerge from the Italian neo-realist movement is essential viewing for cinema lovers. De Sica's masterful film is vividly sketched, compellingly natural and unbearably moving. Essential.

Blindness

Brazilian filmmaker Meirelles' adaptation of José Saramago's novel about the impact of a blindness epidemic on a city. Meirelles has reduced the story to be more about the plight of a doctor and his wife (Ruffalo and Moore) who are forced quarantine when the doctor loses his sight. Stark and flawed attempt at fin de siècle sci-fi.

Date Location
Bruno (Butterfield) is the nine-year old son of a Nazi Commandant (Thewlis). When his father is seconded to manage a concentration camp, the lonely Bruno makes a new friend, Schmuel (Scanlon), beyond the high wire. Badly acted and clumsily directed, this liberal-guilt-monger-sweeping-cod-historical-nonsense is simply unnecessary.

Das Experiment (Double Bill with The Wave)
Date Location
Although Hirschbiegel's film is adapted from Maria Giordano's novel 'Black Box', its basis lies in true fact - the infamous 1971 Stanford University psychology department experiment in which a group of men became guinea pigs in a prison simulation scenario. With shocking speed they lose their sense of identity and assume the role of guards and prisoners, the former abusing the latter and the latter accepting their lot. Hirschbiegel's film finds a disturbing parallel in the rise to power of…

5,000 Fingers of Dr T

Directed by Turner Prize-winning artist McQueen and written by Irish playwright Enda Walsh, 'Hunger' is the story of the last six weeks of Sands' life. A brave and unforgettable film, tinged with thematic prescience and the politics of belief.

The American aphorism that suggests 'any boy can grow up to be president' is blandly dramatised in Stone's outrageously timed and puffed-up film, the first biopic to consider the life story of a sitting US president. A slickly produced examination of how fascism can enter everyday life, 'The Wave' is a peer pressure teen drama where much of the heat comes from above, noticeably Vogel's high school teacher who wonders what will happen if he instils in the kids a few lessons from the Nazi past.
