Gomorrah

Garrone offers an intriguing account of the Napoli-based Camorra, adapted from the bestselling book by journalist Roberto Saviano. This excellent ensemble drama shows us various facets of Mafia life, from the recruiting of young kids to the infiltration of seemingly legitimate industries such as haute couture and segues into the waste industry. A deserving winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes.

Date Location
Bruno (Butterfield) is the nine-year old son of a Nazi Commandant (Thewlis). When his father is seconded to manage a concentration camp, the lonely Bruno makes a new friend, Schmuel (Scanlon), beyond the high wire. Badly acted and clumsily directed, this liberal-guilt-monger-sweeping-cod-historical-nonsense is simply unnecessary.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Date Location
Toby Young's semi-scandalous memoir about the period the gobby English journo spent carousing with the rich and famous while working at a glossy magazine in New York is given a mainstream movie makeover with this enjoyable enough romantic comedy. Young's rudely confessional and frequently very funny observations are now framed by a bland will-they-won't-they love story that sadly drowns every last scrap of satirical stab.

Taken
Date Location
Retired US secret agent operative Bryan (Neeson) steps into fray when his daughter Kim (Grace), with his ex-wife (Janssen), is 'taken' by sex traffickers on a trip to Paris. A high octane, blood thumping update of Paul Schrader's 1979 'Hardcore' is every bit as ridiculous as it sounds but no less enjoyable for it, with Francophile attitude, Chekhovian familial regret, over the top torture and not a fundamentalist Muslim in sight.

WALL-E
Date Location
Inspired by sci-fi classics from the 1960s and 70s, Pixar have created a post-apocalyptic story set in a future in which the Earth has been abandoned by humankind, where a solitary robot named WALL-E executes his now pointless trash collecting programme. At its heart this is a very sweet romantic comedy, and that's what provides the emotional clout.

Jarrold's revamp of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel pares back the opulent trimmings of the television series to expose the bare bones of Waugh's lament for the civilised past. Charting blithe social climber Charles Ryder (Goode) on his journey from humble Paddington digs to the aristocratic arcadia, the film focuses on his halting love affair with prim posho Julia (Atwell).

I've Loved You So Long
Date Location
In northeast France, Lea (Zylberstein) has just been released from behind bars and the story follows her re-introduction into society and gradual emotional rapprochement with her sister (Scott Thomas). Claudel's directorial debut places everyone inside metaphorical prisons in this patient and sensitively shot family drama.
10 Oct16 Oct 3.25, 6.15 & 9.05 Cameo, Edinburgh
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Date Location
Inevitably bowdlerised but suitably sweaty version of Tennessee Williams' loquacious play. A deceived and cancer-ridden Southern patriarch (Ives) gathers his greedy, in-fighting family for a birthday celebration, and is met by general sycophancy from all except his strangely distant son. Even in diluted form this still packs a punch and the Taylor-Newman teaming is irresistible.
12 Oct Sun 8.45 Filmhouse, Edinburgh
Pineapple Express
Date Location
'Knocked Up' star Rogen returns to play Dale, a permanently-baked legal process-server whose friendly weed-dealer Saul (Franco) sells him a rare strain of cannabis known as 'Pineapple Express'. Times and Winds
Date Location
Erdem's magnificent work provides a striking vision of childhood in a mountainous Anatolian village overlooking the Aegean Sea. Concentrating on the experiences of a trio of pre-pubescent adolescents within this patriarchal community, where modern technologies are noticeably absent, religion and nature are billed as the only forces guiding the routines of the area's inhabitants. Directed with complete assurance, this is a film to savour.

Baby Doll
Date Location
Tennessee Williams and director Kazan took two of the playwright's one act works and turned them into this blackly comic melodrama about a bored teen bride, her clumsy husband and their slyly seductive neighbour. The chaos of the couple's house mirrors the broken-down morality of the characters, while the hot 'n' sweaty Deep South setting keeps passions close to the boil. Wonderful stuff.
14 Oct Tue 8.45 Filmhouse, Edinburgh
Bee Movie
Date Location
Barry B Benson graduates from college to find that he still only has one possible career: making honey. Disillusioned, he moves to Manhattan where he discovers that humans steal and eat honey and resolves to file a lawsuit against the honey giant, Big Honey. An oddly conceived vehicle for a reluctant star, 'Bee Movie' deserves a B-minus for effort.

Fly Me to the Moon
Date Location
A 3D film describing mankind's first trip to the moon is a lively sounding prospect, and moments in Stassen's animation provide a genuine wow-factor, but such moments of poetry are fleeting and the majority of this film insanely focuses on the uninteresting plight of three houseflies who stowaway onboard.

Mes Amis, Mes Amour
Date Location
Less a romantic comedy than a sentimental fantasy of city living among an ultra-friendly community of shopkeepers and bistro-owners, Levy's film examines the incompatibilities of two middle-aged pals who are both divorced and decide to co-habit. The visual and verbal gags reap precious few dividends, however, and Levy appears only to be able to conceive of London in picture-postcard terms.

Date Location
London governess Miss Pettigrew (McDormand) has just lost another job. Dumped by her agency, Miss Pettigrew manages to worm her way into the house of American wannabe starlet Delysia (Adams). Nalluri's attempts to recreate a sparkling Mitchell Leisen style romantic comedy are undone by inferior performances and the complete predictability inherent in this kind of mentally painful experience.

Date Location
Rooted in warm, middle-class family values and about as predictable and inoffensive as a TV sitcom, 'Dan in Real Life' is the story of an advice columnist and widower (Carell) who falls in love with his brother's girlfriend (Binoche). Lead-footed and lame but mildly engaging, Carell's pleasantly effortless comedy style manages to save the film from complete mediocrity.

Depressing update of Clare Booth Luce's 1936 satirical play set in the idle and bitchy world of wealthy wives and divorcees. US TV writer Diane English adapts and directs with little feeling for the sacred text she is dealing with. Aiming for authenticity and intimacy, the director follows his lonely characters (played mainly by non-professionals) into bathrooms and sex parlours, where the camera observes their sagging, protuberant flesh. Absent, however, is any real feeling of compassion towards these forlorn individuals. And the painfully protracted torture scene suggests that Seidl himself relishes depicting his…

Familiar and tedious stuff,'The Duchess' is essentially a beautifully shot period TV drama.

Based on the controversial theories of New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison, Stone's epic account of what did or did not happen when President Kennedy made an untimely exit from this world makes for enthralling cinema. Psycho
Date Location
Hitch's misogynistic masterpiece has a young secretary take off to hicksville with a bagful of her boss' money. Unfortunately for her, she chooses to put up at the Bates' Motel, run by that nice Norman boy. The ironic dialogue ('Mother's not quite herself today') make it a joy to catch any time around. We liked it, didn't we mother . . . mother?

Emperor Palpatine, Count Dooku and General Grievous are poised to rule the galaxy. The universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights, led by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with brand-new heroes such as Anakin's padawan learner, Ahsoka. Like the more recent 'Star Wars' films, this is fairly tedious stuff, but it is nicely animated and fans will probably love it.

Taken (Subtitled)
Date Location
Retired US secret agent operative Bryan (Neeson) steps into fray when his daughter Kim (Grace), with his ex-wife (Janssen), is 'taken' by sex traffickers on a trip to Paris. A high octane, blood thumping update of Paul Schrader's 1979 'Hardcore' is every bit as ridiculous as it sounds but no less enjoyable for it, with Francophile attitude, Chekhovian familial regret, over the top torture and not a fundamentalist Muslim in sight.

Flashbacks of a Fool (Senior Screening)

Set in present-day California and an English seaside resort circa 1972, Joe Scott (Craig between Bond outings), is a washed up Hollywood star who recalls a traumatic teenage experience that leads to professional success and personal self-destruction. Good supporting performances and rather pedestrian flashbacks make for an interesting, if not outstanding drama about the repercussions of childhood folly.

A Man Escaped (Un Condamne A Mort S'est Echappe)

The true story of a French Resistance fighter's escape from imprisonment by the Gestapo. Recently re-released, Bresson's account is both austerely straightforward in its depiction of the story, and sublimely metaphysical in its implications of providence at work. A riveting experience.
