Cashback
Date Location
Ben (Biggerstaff) can't sleep since he split up with girlfriend Suzy (Ryan). Maybe Sharon (Fox) the checkout girl can help him. Writer/director Ellis' extends his 2004 award-winning short of the same name, leading to continuity anomalies and tedious padding amid the amoral ambiguity and high porn of the original, but it's fairly entertaining and soulful for its meagre budget.

Dan in Real Life (Senior Screening)
Date Location
Rooted in warm, middle-class family values and about as predictable and inoffensive as a TV sitcom, 'Dan in Real Life' is the story of an advice columnist and widower (Carell) who falls in love with his brother's girlfriend (Binoche). Lead-footed and lame but mildly engaging, Carell's pleasantly effortless comedy style manages to save the film from complete mediocrity.

Doomsday

In Marshall's derivative but enjoyable dystopian fantasy, Scotland 50 years on is a no-man's land ravaged by disease, cut off from England, and presided over by gangs of cannibals. This may well provide a few guilty pleasures for jaded action fans, but non-genre fans will find this about as subtle as a nail-encrusted club in the face

Even Dwarfs Started Small
Date Location
Herzog's brilliantly bizarre parable about a remote penal colony inhabited by dwarfs, who stage a revolution in the prison warden's absence. This has to be seen to be believed, unmissable.

Witless, plodding rom-com romp that reunites 'How to Lose A Guy in Ten Days' pretty pair McConaughey and Hudson as estranged husband and wife-cum-treasure hunters on the trail of a legendary treasure ship, assisted by Sutherland's dapper billionaire and pursued by Hart's ruthless rapper-gangster. Funny Games US
Date Location
Shot-by-shot, English language remake of Austrian auteur Haneke's post-modern 1997 thriller 'Funny Games', relocated to the US. The tormenting of a family of three (Watts, Roth and Gearheart) by sociopaths Paul and Peter (Pitt and Corbet) while on holiday provide an interrogation of the relationship between violence and voyeurism that remains wholly engrossing and deeply shocking.

Garage
Date Location
Like Abrahamson's quirky junkie comedy 'Adam and Paul', 'Garage' is another instance of oddballs living life on the margins of Irish society, which casts stand-up comedian Shortt as village idiot gas station attendant Josie, whose attempts at relationships are painful and heart-wrenching to watch. With lofty ambitions, this sophomore effort suffers from heavy-handed dénouement at odds with its winning, smart observations and offbeat comedy.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Horton Hears A Who!
Date Location
Animators Blue Sky take a break from their ongoing 'Ice Age' franchise to colourfully realise the universe of Dr Seuss' text. In Bruges
Date Location
Two gobby Dublin criminals bide their time in Bruges, awating instruction from their cryptic and remote gangster boss Harry. Irish playwright McDonagh, in his feature debut, which wrestles some affecting moments from demonstrative characters, nicely teases out the parallels between the trio and Beckett's Vladimir, Estragon and Godot.

Iron Man
Date Location
Performing a perfectly poised balancing act between taking the fantastical material seriously and treating it with a knowing sense of humour, this smart adaptation locates Tony Stark/Iron Man's story of professional irresponsibility and personal redemption firmly within the context of the war on terror. Joy Division
Date Location
Beautifully cut and imaginatively constructed documentary explaining the swift rise and abrupt cessation of Joy Division (and troubled singer Ian Curtis ) through rare footage, TV appearances, bootleg recordings, personal photographs and recollections. The film rubbishes the ludicrous rock'n'roll myth of 'live fast, die young' to tell the story with humour, warmth and often-painful clarity.
