Batman Begins (Double Bill with The Dark Knight)

Deeply flawed but satisfyingly dark and realistic adaptation of both Bob Kane's original strips and Frank Miller's 'Batman: Year One'. David 'Blade' Goyer's script is pretty awful but this is also a fairly substandard piece of work from Nolan as well. 'Batman Begins' does, however, need to be applauded for partly revitalising an ailing franchise.

After going into hospital for an endoscopy, Bertram starts to see dead people, one of whom, Frank (Kinnear), is about to change Bertram's life by introducing him to widower Gwen (Leoni). The results are predictably bland but not without their merits.

Frankie Dunn (Eastwood) is an ageing boxing trainer who takes on 31-year-old Maggie Fitzgerald (Swank) despite believing female boxing is just 'the latest freak show'. Told from the perspective of Dunn's partner - Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris (Freeman ) - at a crumbling gym, like the best sports movies, this is not really about sports but human relationships. Indeed the film is at its worst when it operates as a boxing movie. A mild return to form for Eastwood.

The universe rests in the hands of the daring Jedi Knights, led by Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with brand-new heroes such as Anakin's padawan learner, Ahsoka. Like the more recent 'Star Wars' films, this is fairly tedious stuff, but it is nicely animated and fans will probably love it.

Inspired by sci-fi classics from the 1960s and 70s, Pixar have created a post-apocalyptic story set in a future in which the Earth has been abandoned by humankind, where a solitary robot named WALL-E executes his now pointless trash collecting programme. At its heart this is a very sweet romantic comedy, and that's what provides the emotional clout. This screening is followed by a screening of the Pixar short 'Presto'.
