Appaloosa
Date Location
Based on Robert B Parker's Western novel, 'Appaloosa' charts two young men's attempt to police a small town lorded-over by a rancher. The arrival of a beautiful widow complicates matters further. Traditional but powerful western which relies on narrative psychology and fine performance work rather than special effects. Following on from 2000's 'Pollock' Harris proves himself to be a more than interesting filmmaker.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
Date Location
Bruno (Butterfield) is the nine-year old son of a Nazi Commandant (Thewlis). When his father is seconded to manage a concentration camp, the lonely Bruno makes a new friend, Schmuel (Scanlon), beyond the high wire. Badly acted and clumsily directed, this liberal-guilt-monger-sweeping-cod-historical-nonsense is simply unnecessary.

Brideshead Revisited
Date Location
Jarrold's revamp of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel pares back the opulent trimmings of the television series to expose the bare bones of Waugh's lament for the civilised past. Charting blithe social climber Charles Ryder (Goode) on his journey from humble Paddington digs to the aristocratic arcadia, the film focuses on his halting love affair with prim posho Julia (Atwell).

The Company
Date Location
A drama about the lives and loves, hopes and fears and successes and failures of a ballet company, filtered through the vision of Hollywood maverick Altman. Eschewing the melodrama and histrionics associated with film forays into the world of stage showbiz, this instead constructs a detailed portrait of the ballet world. A distinctly Altman-esque film,'The Company' is, in fact, the brainchild of Campbell. Campbell, once a student at the National School of Ballet in Canada, gets a story-writing…

Nolan's revamp of the superhero franchise reaches its apotheosis with this sequel to 'Batman Begins', a supremely well-imagined, perfectly executed film that combines blockbuster spectacle with indie cinema cool and smarts. Death Race
Date Location
Rehashed elements from Roger Corman's 70s 'Death Race 2000' with Statham as Jensen Ames, who is forced by prison warden Hennessey (Allen) to take part in a three stage Death Race on pay-per-view television. The chase sequences are satisfying and Allen clearly enjoys some action-movie slumming, director Anderson's reboot is predictably stripped of the anarchic humour and political sideswipes of the original.

88 Minutes
Date Location
Pacino plays Jack Gramm, a forensic scientist who finds himself framed for murder. Given 88 minutes to find the real culprit, Pacino wearily scrambles between police, suspects and a Death Row killer to prove his innocence. With a ludicrously cheesy cliffhanger climax, '88 Minutes' amounts to rank codswallop.

The Fall
Date Location
A little girl (Untaru) meets a paralysed stuntman in hospital (Pace) and the patient proceeds to relate a colourful tale, all influenced by his state of mind. As time goes by the boundaries between fiction and reality blur rather alarmingly. An extravagant, self-indulgent, amazing, eye-catching and confounding work.

Female Agents
Date Location
Allegedly based on a true story: in spring 1944 Churchill oversees a suicidal sabotage and rescue mission by female members of the French Resistance - a showgirl (Gillain), an explosives expert (Déborah François), a prostitute (Depardieu), a radio operator (Maya Sansa) and their leader (Marceau). Salome is an arch stylist and copyist but beyond the handful of great performances this feels like another po-faced TV mini series: interesting but pedestrian.

Fly Me to the Moon
Date Location
A 3D film describing mankind's first trip to the moon is a lively sounding prospect, and moments in Stassen's animation provide a genuine wow-factor, but such moments of poetry are fleeting and the majority of this film insanely focuses on the uninteresting plight of three houseflies who stowaway onboard.

The Glass Menagerie
Date Location
Frothy, liberal and enjoyable adaptation of Tennessee Williams' classic play stars Douglas 'gentleman caller' Jim to faded Southern belle Amanda (Lawrence). This, the first film adaptation of the play, was despised by Williams for the liberties it took with the text, most notably the ending.

Good Dick
Date Location
A young girl (Palka) whiles away her time in the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles watching pornography rented from her local video store. One of the boys that works in the store takes a shine to her and the pair enter into a sadomasochistic relationship. Beneath a seedy and disturbing exterior, this is a very sweet, very affecting and quite sophisticated film.

Guillermo del Toro returns to Hollywood with a second blockbuster adaptation of Dark Horse Comics' cult supernatural title. A new storyline pits the hell-spawned hero against a mighty mechanised legion of unstoppable warriors. How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Date Location
Toby Young's semi-scandalous memoir about the period the gobby English journo spent carousing with the rich and famous while working at a glossy magazine in New York is given a mainstream movie makeover with this enjoyable enough romantic comedy. Young's rudely confessional and frequently very funny observations are now framed by a bland will-they-won't-they love story that sadly drowns every last scrap of satirical stab.

In northeast France, Lea (Zylberstein) has just been released from behind bars and the story follows her re-introduction into society and gradual emotional rapprochement with her sister (Scott Thomas). Joy Division
Date Location
Beautifully cut and imaginatively constructed documentary explaining the swift rise and abrupt cessation of Joy Division (and troubled singer Ian Curtis ) through rare footage, TV appearances, bootleg recordings, personal photographs and recollections. The film rubbishes the ludicrous rock'n'roll myth of 'live fast, die young' to tell the story with humour, warmth and often-painful clarity.

The everyday struggles of four half-brothers and their single pregnant mother Cleuza (Corveloni) in São Paulo are the order of the day, complete with a search for a father and aspirations to be a footballer from 18-year-old Dario (de Oliveira). Lee's newest outing is an espionage thriller. In WWII Shanghai, Wong Chia Chi (Wei Tang), under the tutelage of Kuang Yu Min (Lee-Hom Wang), goes undercover to ferret out Japanese collaborator Mr Yee (Leung). In the first of a planned trilogy on the Mongol leader's life, Genghis Khan (Asano) suffers imprisonment, the murder of his father and the loss of his bride before waging war against his traitorous one-time ally.
