Azur and Asmar: The Princes' Quest
Date Location
Childhood buddies Azur and Asmar become rivals and enemies in a medieval Maghreb. With the action taking place in North African Islamic architecture and over-populated bazaars, the colourful palatte of the animation and 'Arabian Nights'-style storyline is a welcome throwback to the days before Pixar tore up the rulebook. A compassionate and mature film based on classic legends rather than popular culture.

Caramel
Date Location
Charming, bitter-sweet debut feature from writer-director Labaki that centres upon the 'Si Belle' beauty parlour in the Lebanese capital and the dramas of the female clientele. The film is impressively acted by a mostly non-professional cast. While there are no references to the on-going strife in Lebanon, this is still a political film, and a tender tribute to female solidarity.

Charlie Bartlett
Date Location
Charlie's a joker who manufactures fake IDs and deals his prescribed anti-depression drugs to his classmates, craving popularity to compensate for a fractured family life. Whilst robbed of any wider social resonance, this is an amusing enough take on the agonies of youth, and 'Charlie Bartlett' deserves a B+ for effort.

Charlotte's Web
Date Location
Chirpy tot Fern (Fanning) rescues Wilbur the pig from a cruel farmyard fate for lovable arachnid Charlotte to eventually save the day in a bittersweet finale that touches on practical matters of life and death. Somewhere between the cutesy 'Babe' and Orwell's political 'Animal Farm' it should draw in children and nostalgic adults alike.
17 May18 May Sat & Sun 11.00am Empire Clydebank, Clydebank
Children of Glory
Date Location
Old-fashioned, melodramatic account of the 50th anniversary of the doomed Hungarian uprising against Soviet rule in 1956, which privileges action and spectacle over analysis and moral ambiguity and is at its best in its visual recreation of the attempted revolution.
16 May18 May Fri 6.15; Sat 5.30; Sun 7.45 Eden Court Theatre, Inverness
Daddy Day Camp
Date Location
Unloveable sequel to the equally unlovable 'Daddy Day Care' which hails a new low in Gooding's career. Crude and sentimental, the film relies on bodily-fluid gags that fall well short of the barely-raised bar established by kiddie pratfall comedies such as 'Cheaper by the Dozen'.

In the Liverpool of the late 40s and early 50s, a working class household perseveres through domestic violence, death and marriage. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Date Location
Julian Schnabel's third biopic tells the tale of 'Elle' editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Almaric) who, after suffering a debilitating stroke, authored a slim memoir, 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'. This is an unusual, rich, formless and challenging film, which fits perfectly with the triumph of the human spirit theme that runs through Bauby's core text.
18 May Sun 7.30 Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy
Doomsday
Date Location
In Marshall's derivative but enjoyable dystopian fantasy, Scotland 50 years on is a no-man's land ravaged by disease, cut off from England, and presided over by gangs of cannibals. This may well provide a few guilty pleasures for jaded action fans, but non-genre fans will find this about as subtle as a nail-encrusted club in the face

Drillbit Taylor

Enchanted
Date Location
Two fairytale characters struggle to find each other and make it in the 'real' world in this mix of live and animated action (à la 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'). 'Enchanted' is one of the nastiest, most insidious children's films adults will have the displeasure of seeing this year. Chock full of pseudo Christian ideas, Waspish imperialism, product placement and celebrations of consumer culture this is about as evil as Disney gets. Leave your critical faculties, reason and humanity at the door.
17 May18 May Sat & Sun 1.30 Macrobert, Stirling
The English Patient
Date Location
A mysterious stranger suffering from horrific burns is cared for by a Canadian nurse during the final days of WWII. In flashback, we discover more about the great romantic affair whose tragic climax brought him to this state. 17 May18 May Sat & Sun 8.00 Macrobert, Stirling
Evan Almighty
Date Location
One-joke comedy about a humble congressman (Carell) who is visited by God (a painfully smug Freeman) and told to build an ark. With animals lining up two by two, Evan is forced to question his maker's mysterious ways during his conversion from straight-laced suit to mystic sage in this tepid religious farce.
17 May18 May Sat & Sun 11.00am Empire Clydebank, Clydebank
The Eye
Date Location
Alba (in one of her better performances) stars as a blind concert violinist who becomes haunted by terrifying supernatural visions once a corneal transplant restores her sight. Yet another Asian horror remake, this does contain some disturbing imagery early on but sticks too closely to formula and brings no new focus to the genre.

Funny Games
Date Location
A wealthy family are subjected to an increasingly horrific series of 'games' by two young men, beginning with humiliation and ending in torture and murder. The horror-thriller set up seems familiar, but 'Funny Games' is one of the most innovative and shocking films to reach our screens this decade. Chilling, calculated, cerebral, brilliant.

Funny Games US
Date Location
Shot-by-shot, English language remake of Austrian auteur Haneke's post-modern 1997 thriller 'Funny Games', relocated to the US. The tormenting of a family of three (Watts, Roth and Gearheart) by sociopaths Paul and Peter (Pitt and Corbet) while on holiday provide an interrogation of the relationship between violence and voyeurism that remains wholly engrossing and deeply shocking.

The Game Plan
Date Location
'The Game Plan' follows the fortunes of Elvis-obsessed American football superstar quarterback Joe Kingsman (Johnson) and his estranged eight-year old daughter (Pettis) when she enrols him in ballet school. The result is overblown and overlong, bland and formulaic, yet its earnest brand of character comedy for pre-teens pays off.

Grindhouse
Date Location
Tarantino and Rodriguez's salute to the 1970s exploitation movie focuses on an ex-stripper with a grenade launcher-equipped machine gun leg, who meets and greets a troop of flesh eating mutating zombies. Taking a step down in tone, Tarantino's 'Death Proof' traces two groups of women tied together only by the presence of a lunatic ex-Hollywood stuntman. Complete with the original imaginary trailers, this 'double feature' offers the 'Grindhouse' package up on one deliciously cultish plate.

Happy-Go-Lucky

Leigh returns with a familiar, yet reassuringly different film, an affectionate portrait of carefree 30-something Londoner Poppy (Hawkins) and the minutiae of her everyday life. About everything and nothing, the downtime and the uptime, this is life-affirming stuff.

Heartbeat Detector
Date Location
This French corporate thriller adapted from François Emmanuel's novel 'La Question Humaine' is demanding and rewarding in equal measure. Amalric is the psychologist of a German-French petrochemical company who's asked to discretely assess the mental state of the Paris office's CEO (Lonsdale) until disturbing links between his firm and the Nazis start to take their toll. A beautifully executed and horribly convincing film.

Honeydripper
Date Location
It's 1950 in rural Alabama and morally circumspect pianist Tyrone Purvis (Glover) is trying to save the Honeydripper lounge from bankruptcy and his ass from prison. Although this benign and jolly tale is too long and features too many characters, Sayles' ability to spin a good yarn remains undiminished, irreproachable, enviable and all too rare.

Horton Hears A Who!
Date Location
Animators Blue Sky take a break from their ongoing 'Ice Age' franchise to colourfully realise the universe of Dr Seuss' text. Both Carrey and Carrell are allowed full rein for their brand of vocal mugging as co-directors Hayward and Martino skilfully guide 'Horton' towards a comforting moral about size not being all that important.

How She Move
Date Location
Ripping off the premise from last year's 'Stomp The Yard', 'How She Move' focuses on aspiring doctor Raya (Wesley), who seeks to express herself in the world of dance. While choreographer Hi Hat's dance sequences are dynamically shot and edited, this MTV production is hampered by sanctimonious lectures, stereotypical characters and hackneyed plotting, insulting the very culture it seeks to celebrate.

Date Location
Two gobby Dublin criminals bide their time in Bruges, awating instruction from their cryptic and remote gangster boss Harry. Irish playwright McDonagh, in his feature debut, which wrestles some affecting moments from demonstrative characters, nicely teases out the parallels between the trio and Beckett's Vladimir, Estragon and Godot.

Joy Division
Date Location
Beautifully cut and imaginatively constructed documentary explaining the swift rise and abrupt cessation of Joy Division (and troubled singer Ian Curtis ) through rare footage, TV appearances, bootleg recordings, personal photographs and recollections. The film rubbishes the ludicrous rock'n'roll myth of 'live fast, die young' to tell the story with humour, warmth and often-painful clarity.

The Last Mistress
Date Location
Breillat's most accessible work to date is based on the 19th century novel by the controversial writer Jules-Amedee Barbey d'Aurevilly. This is no staid costume drama: in 1835 Paris dashing and dissolute Ryno de Marigny (Aattou) is engaged to the virginal heiress Hermengarde (Mesquida) while still embroiled in a liaison with a scandalous Spanish courtesan Vellini (Argento).

Dodge Connolly (Clooney) is a cocky but charming football hero who is determined that his team will hit the big time. Investigative journalist Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) smells a story and the two become entangled in more ways than one. This wannabe Preston Sturges style romantic comedy set against the backdrop of the burgeoning American football league in 1925 yields tepid results and is Clooney's least interesting film as a director.

Tom (Dempsey) is a wealthy New York City playboy who only realises his best friend Hannah (Monaghan) is the love of his life when she plans to marry dashing stranger Colin (McKidd). Predictable 'ménage a trois' rom-com, which relocates to Scotland for some cultural stereotyping.
