Ben X
Date Location
This mock-documentary introduces us to teen Asperger's sufferer Ben. Moving backwards and forwards between his so-called life of bullying and high school torture and his escape into online role playing games, the film delivers a doom laden narrative. Balthazar's debut feature cleverly dodges and ducks where you would otherwise expect it to run straight.

Date Location
Bruno (Butterfield) is the nine-year old son of a Nazi Commandant (Thewlis). When his father is seconded to manage a concentration camp, the lonely Bruno makes a new friend, Schmuel (Scanlon), beyond the high wire. Badly acted and clumsily directed, this liberal-guilt-monger-sweeping-cod-historical-nonsense is simply unnecessary.

Jarrold's revamp of Evelyn Waugh's classic novel pares back the opulent trimmings of the television series to expose the bare bones of Waugh's lament for the civilised past. Death Race
Date Location
Rehashed elements from Roger Corman's 70s 'Death Race 2000' with Statham as Jensen Ames, who is forced by prison warden Hennessey (Allen) to take part in a three stage Death Race on pay-per-view television. The chase sequences are satisfying and Allen clearly enjoys some action-movie slumming, director Anderson's reboot is predictably stripped of the anarchic humour and political sideswipes of the original.

The Duchess
Date Location
Period drama retelling the true life story of early 19th century socialite Georgiana Cavendish (Knightley), who finds herself in a mismatched and temperamental marriage, complete with a meddling other woman. She falls for the future prime minister Charles Grey (Cooper) but only inequality and tragedy can come of such assignations. Familiar and tedious stuff,'The Duchess' is essentially a beautifully shot period TV drama.

The Foot Fist Way
Date Location
A low-budget mockumentary about a small-time martial arts training school and inept tae kwon do instructor Fred Simmons (McBride). Will Ferrell's endorsement got this to the big screen but the film inevitably feels more like an inspired home movie than a proper feature, without much in the way of plot development or a satisfying pay-off.

Get Smart
Date Location
Segal's tent-pole blockbuster revamp of 1960's spy spoof 'Get Smart' features Carell as an over-prepared secret agent whose clumsiness often leads to the apprehension of enemy spies. Given his chance to shine, Smart is sent to Moscow where he elicits the support of co-spy Agent 99 (Hathaway) as they attempt to thwart the terrorist schemes of KAOS megalomaniac Siegfried (Stamp).

Gomorrah
Date Location
Garrone offers an intriguing account of the Napoli-based Camorra, adapted from the bestselling book by journalist Roberto Saviano. This excellent ensemble drama shows us various facets of Mafia life, from the recruiting of young kids to the infiltration of seemingly legitimate industries such as haute couture and segues into the waste industry. A deserving winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes.

Good Dick
Date Location
A young girl (Palka) whiles away her time in the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles watching pornography rented from her local video store. One of the boys that works in the store takes a shine to her and the pair enter into a sadomasochistic relationship. Beneath a seedy and disturbing exterior, this is a very sweet, very affecting and quite sophisticated film.

The House Bunny
Date Location
Predictably pitiful comedy about a recently unemployed 'Playboy' mansion bunny (Farris) who goes to college. Formulaic 'Legally Blonde'ish slapstick which still manages to raise a few laughs.

How to Lose Friends and Alienate People
Date Location
Toby Young's semi-scandalous memoir about the period the gobby English journo spent carousing with the rich and famous while working at a glossy magazine in New York is given a mainstream movie makeover with this enjoyable enough romantic comedy. Young's rudely confessional and frequently very funny observations are now framed by a bland will-they-won't-they love story that sadly drowns every last scrap of satirical stab.

Macdonald's first fictional film sees McAvoy playing Nicholas Garrigan as a smooth-talking lovable rogue who accidentally ingratiates himself with 1970s Ugandan president Idi Amin (Whitaker). With a career best performance from Whitaker and an action packed pace, it makes for a commendable action film rather than an astute political portrait.

Ritchie's story is told with a signature narration and follows the pursuits of a bunch of get-rich-quick, bumbling, loveable rogues who could have walked straight off the set of an Ealing comedy. With trademark flashes of visual panache and humour, it's all perfectly serviceable, but still leaves us guessing over whether Ritchie is just a one-trick pony.
