Awake
Date Location
Clay (Christensen) experiences 'anaesthetic awareness' (meaning he is fully conscious but paralysed during surgery), which has far-reaching consequences for him and his fiancée Sam (Alba). In lesser hands, 'Awake' would have been a tawdry melodrama, but the film works well on several levels. This is, however, not for the squeamish.

Funny Games
Date Location
A wealthy family are subjected to an increasingly horrific series of 'games' by two young men, beginning with humiliation and ending in torture and murder. The horror-thriller set up seems familiar, but 'Funny Games' is one of the most innovative and shocking films to reach our screens this decade. Chilling, calculated, cerebral, brilliant.

Funny Games US
Date Location
Shot-by-shot, English language remake of Austrian auteur Haneke's post-modern 1997 thriller 'Funny Games', relocated to the US. The tormenting of a family of three (Watts, Roth and Gearheart) by sociopaths Paul and Peter (Pitt and Corbet) while on holiday provide an interrogation of the relationship between violence and voyeurism that remains wholly engrossing and deeply shocking.

Lust, Caution
Date Location
Lee's newest outing is an espionage thriller. In WWII Shanghai, Wong Chia Chi (Wei Tang), under the tutelage of Kuang Yu Min (Lee-Hom Wang), goes undercover to ferret out Japanese collaborator Mr Yee (Leung). Lushly designed and full of excellent performances this is the kind of compelling and mature filmmaking that lee has made his own. Recommended.
21 May Wed 8.30 Odeon Dunfermline, Dunfermline
Oxford Murders
Date Location
Professor Arthur Seldom (John Hurt) and student Martin (Wood) simultaneously discover the body of an old lady (Massey) and become entangled in solving an elaborate puzzle of strange deaths. This Mexican/Spanish but essentially English crime tale plays like an episode of 'Midsomer Murders' (albeit it a particularly good one), with absorbing plot and quality performances leading to the far from obvious dénouement.

Sleuth
Date Location
Having played opposite Laurence Olivier in the original, Caine now switches roles as the arch tormentor who invites his wife's much younger lover (Law) to his country house for a dangerous game of cat and mouse. Visually dull, and despite some terse dialogue by Harold Pinter, a largely clueless affair. Caine appears to be having fun, but Law's smug, charmless signature act is wearyingly overused.
