Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Date Location
Stephen Sondheim's landmark 1979 Broadway musical is given the Burton treatment with Depp as the murdering butcher single-mindedly determined to avenge the kidnapping of his wife and daughter. With Mrs Lovett (Carter) as the emotional lynchpin of the piece, Rickman as the perfect pantomime villain and daring production design from Dante Ferretti, this is a visual and aural treat.
23 Aug 8.00 Wynd Theatre, Melrose
Hairspray (Parent & Baby Screening)
Date Location
Faithful adaptation of the Broadway musical rather than a remake of John Waters' 1988 film. Although darker elements of the story are lost in pursuit of fun and a mainstream audience, this all-singing, all-dancing teen flick shines amid a summer of noisy blockbuster sequels. Travolta's surprisingly endearing performance (in full drag) as Edna Turnblad is the cherry on top.

Mamma Mia! (Sing-a-Long and Subtitled)
Date Location
A bride-to-be tries to find out the identity of her real father in the lead up to her wedding on a Greek island. Depressingly faithful film adaptation of abominable Broadway and West End ABBA song musical mega hit. The popularity of films like this certainly make one wonder about the rampancy of mental illness in our culture. With subtitled song lyrics to keep your audience participation word-perfect, in addition to the full dialogue subtitles.

The Wizard Of Oz
Date Location
Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed, just chockful of great songs, characterisation and memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable for the curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch of the West though.
