WALL-E
Date Location
Inspired by sci-fi classics from the 1960s and 70s, Pixar have created a post-apocalyptic story set in a future in which the Earth has been abandoned by humankind, where a solitary robot named WALL-E executes his now pointless trash collecting programme. At its heart this is a very sweet romantic comedy, and that's what provides the emotional clout.

Nim's Island
Date Location
Adapted from Wendy Orr's popular book about what happens when agoraphobic authoress Alexandra Ryder (Foster) is contacted by winsome brat Nim (Breslin), whose scientist father Jack (Butler) has gone missing. Breslin and Butler adapt well to the frothy postmodern adventure but Foster's attempts at slapstick are embarrassingly crude and obvious, lessening any emotional impact.

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Likeable pre-school comedy featuring a bunch of pint sized chipmunk pop stars and their long-suffering human guardian (Lee).

Charlotte's Web (Subtitled)
Date Location
Chirpy tot Fern (Fanning) rescues Wilbur the pig from a cruel farmyard fate for lovable arachnid Charlotte to eventually save the day in a bittersweet finale that touches on practical matters of life and death. Somewhere between the cutesy 'Babe' and Orwell's political 'Animal Farm' it should draw in children and nostalgic adults alike.
30 Aug Sat 11.30am Glasgow Film Theatre, Glasgow
The Railway Children
Date Location
A trio of youngsters' involvement with the railway that runs past their garden leads them into adventure. Pleasing family film with an old-fashioned, comfortably British feel that sets it apart from contemporary kids movies.
23 Aug24 Aug Sat & Sun 1.15 Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee
The Wizard Of Oz
Date Location
Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed, just chockful of great songs, characterisation and memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable for the curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch of the West though.
