Breakfast At Tiffany's
Date Location
'How do I look?' asks original waif Hepburn in the role of borderline schizophrenic Holly Golightly. 'Very good, I must say I'm amazed,' replies Peppard in the role of frustrated writer and part-time gigolo Paul Varjak in this adaptation from the novel by Truman Capote. The iconic Hepburn has never made neurosis look so good, and while the film may have numerous redeeming features (not least the exquisite cinematography by Franz F Plane and the swinging soundtrack by Henry Mancini), it is she…

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Date Location
Julian Schnabel's third biopic tells the tale of 'Elle' editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Almaric) who, after suffering a debilitating stroke, authored a slim memoir, 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'. This is an unusual, rich, formless and challenging film, which fits perfectly with the triumph of the human spirit theme that runs through Bauby's core text.

Dog Days
Date Location
Welcome to 'Dog Days', Austrian director Seidl's vision of suburban hell on a sweltering summer weekend. Aiming for authenticity and intimacy, the director follows his lonely characters (played mainly by non-professionals) into bathrooms and sex parlours, where the camera observes their sagging, protuberant flesh. Absent, however, is any real feeling of compassion towards these forlorn individuals. And the painfully protracted torture scene suggests that Seidl himself relishes depicting his…

The Last King of Scotland
Date Location
Macdonald's first fictional film sees McAvoy playing Nicholas Garrigan as a smooth-talking lovable rogue who accidentally ingratiates himself with 1970s Ugandan president Idi Amin (Whitaker). With a career best performance from Whitaker and an action packed pace, it makes for a commendable action film rather than an astute political portrait.

Dan in Real Life
Date Location
Rooted in warm, middle-class family values and about as predictable and inoffensive as a TV sitcom, 'Dan in Real Life' is the story of an advice columnist and widower (Carell) who falls in love with his brother's girlfriend (Binoche). Lead-footed and lame but mildly engaging, Carell's pleasantly effortless comedy style manages to save the film from complete mediocrity.
20 Oct 7.30 Brunton Theatre, Edinburgh
Happy-Go-Lucky (Senior Screening)
Date Location
Leigh returns with a familiar, yet reassuringly different film, an affectionate portrait of carefree 30-something Londoner Poppy (Hawkins) and the minutiae of her everyday life. About everything and nothing, the downtime and the uptime, this is life-affirming stuff.

The Fugitive Kind
Date Location
A mysterious stranger with a pretty name rolls into town. Will Valentine Xavier (Brando) settle down or wreak havoc? Excellent Tennessee Williams adaptation with the stars and director all in the first flush of their prodigious talents.

Jules et Jim
Date Location
French New Wave filmmaker Truffaut's third film, made in 1962, was undoubtedly his masterpiece and released on a lovely new print still speaks to a contemporary consciousness. Set in the 1910s and 20s it is the story of a freewheeling love triangle between alpha female Catherine (Moreau), Austrian Jules (Werner) and Frenchman Jim (Serre).
8 Oct Wed 7.30 Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, Dumfries
The Savages
Date Location
A richly observed and terrifically-acted character study of two intellectual middle-aged siblings and their dementia-suffering father. Judiciously balancing humour and sorrow, Jenkins proves a quietly assured storyteller while Linney and Hoffman deliver unshowy, multilayered performances.
9 Oct Thu 5.45 Filmhouse, Edinburgh
Some Voices
Date Location
Ray (Craig) is trying to readjust to life after a stint in a psychiatric institution. As he wanders through West London he stumbles into Laura (Macdonald), with whom he becomes infatuated and the unlikely romance blossoms. Adapted by playwright Joe Penhall from his own successful stage play, the characters fail to transfer to the silver screen. This screening will be preceded by a short film from the SMHAFF film competition.
10 Oct Fri 5.45 Filmhouse, Edinburgh
A Streetcar Named Desire
Date Location
Brando takes the acting honours and, with this film, sets the style for method acting for years to come. Tennessee Williams' steamy sex romp seems a little tame by today's standards, but the realism of the drama remains intact and the performances are to be savoured.
