The Blue Angel
Date Location
Berlin's decadent cabaret era is vibrantly brought to life as Dietrich's voluptuous singer Lola-Lola sets out to seduce and destroy a bourgeois schoolteacher. In her first major role, the actress taps into a potent current of female sexuality.

The Devil Wears Prada
Date Location
Nice, twee wannabee journalist Andy (Hathaway) finds herself employed as one of two personal secretaries to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Streep), an Anna Wintour style fashion editor. With killer one lines, really well rounded characterisation and excellent performances, it's difficult not to fall for its myriad charms. Though formulaic, in terms of decent mainstream US films this year, this enjoyably innocuous, bitchy romp, may be as good as it gets.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Date Location
Julian Schnabel's third biopic tells the tale of 'Elle' editor Jean-Dominique Bauby (Almaric) who, after suffering a debilitating stroke, authored a slim memoir, 'The Diving Bell and the Butterfly'. This is an unusual, rich, formless and challenging film, which fits perfectly with the triumph of the human spirit theme that runs through Bauby's core text.

Himalaya
Date Location
In the high mountains of the Himalayas, a village prepares for the annual yak caravan to market. However, the young chieftain has been killed and the old clan head refuses to recognise the hot-headed Karma as his successor. A worthy insight into the lives of a hardy people. The landscape is breathtakingly shot, and the attention to local detail feels authentic. The plot has less going for it, being at heart a fairly hackneyed story of an heir to the throne having to prove he is worthy of the…

The Kite Runner
Date Location
Gripping and moving adaptation of the novel by Khaled Hosseini, about two boys whose ordinary lives become caught up in Afghanistan's tumultuous politics. Spanning three decades and two continents, 'The Kite Runner' is a saga of guilt, regret and redemption. As a meditation on Afghanistan, it will always have to stand in line with Siddiq Barmak's disturbing 'Osama' and Samira Makhmalbaf's 'At Five in the Afternoon', but that is fine company to keep.
9 Sep 8.00 Wynd Theatre, Melrose

A thriller set in the rarefied world of classical music. After Melanie's (François) childhood audition is thwarted by famous pianist Ariane (Frot), she seeks payback in this cleverly understated revenge drama from French writer-director Dercourt. When the violence comes, it's all the more memorable for the lack of bloodshed.
