War Horse
Date Location
(4 stars) Alcoholic farmer Ted (Mullen) buys a spirited horse, Joey, in an England unwittingly on the brink of World War I; his teenage son (Irvine) tames Joey, but war soon separates them. Spielberg promises and delivers large-canvas, unashamedly romanticised, old-fashioned storytelling. In an excellent cast, Hiddleston, Watson and Arestrup are standouts.

Titanic
Date Location
(3 stars) Cameron tackles the story of the doomed ocean liner through a touching love story that isn't overwhelmed by the awesome special effects. Rich girl Rose (Winslet) is unhappily engaged to arrogant Cal (Zane) but falls for third-class passenger Jack (DiCaprio). Love blossoms as the ship hits an iceberg in the North Atlantic, conveying both the scale of the disaster and the feeling of claustrophobia as the water rises.

Battleship
Date Location
(2 stars) When aliens invade the waters around Hawaii, wayward naval officer Alex Hopper (Kitsch) must assemble a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits to fight back. Director Berg is a naval buff, so it's disappointing that a chance to refresh the action genre is thrown away in favour of a humdrum alien-invasion plot.

Monsters, Inc.
Date Location
This CGI animation from Toy Story makers Pixar is set largely in Monstropolis, a city inhabited by the foulest of beasts. The monsters power their city by sending 'scarers' through doors which teleport them into children's rooms. Once there, they pull faces at the kids, producing shrieks of terror, which are bottled back in Monstropolis and used as a source of energy. It's a neat idea, but what really lifts the film is the sense of fun that pervades the whole movie. Monsters, Inc runs as…
