The Accidental Husband (Senior Screening)
Date Location
Talk radio host Emma Lloyd (Thurman) advises one of her listeners to dump her fireman fiancée days before their wedding. Jilted ex Patrick (Morgan) decides to get his revenge on the radio host and her posh, dull husband-to-be Richard (Firth) with comic and romantic results. Solid, likeably old-fashioned romantic comedy with decent performances and a simple predictable script that never overreaches itself.

And When Did You Last See Your Father?
Date Location
Adaptation of Blake Morrison's painfully honest memoir about the changes his relationship with his overbearing father (Broadbent) undergoes when the old man becomes terminally ill and Blake (Firth) is forced to reassess their relationship. Broadbent's performance is towering and heartbreaking, and Firth is admirably restrained in this alternately funny, harrowing and moving film.
6 Jun 7.30 Woodend Barn Arts Centre, Banchory
Awake
Date Location
Clay (Christensen) experiences 'anaesthetic awareness' (meaning he is fully conscious but paralysed during surgery), which has far-reaching consequences for him and his fiancée Sam (Alba). In lesser hands, 'Awake' would have been a tawdry melodrama, but the film works well on several levels. This is, however, not for the squeamish.
20 May22 May Tue & Wed 7.30; Thu 9.00 Pickaquoy Centre, Orkney
Azur and Asmar: The Princes' Quest
Date Location
Childhood buddies Azur and Asmar become rivals and enemies in a medieval Maghreb. With the action taking place in North African Islamic architecture and over-populated bazaars, the colourful palatte of the animation and 'Arabian Nights'-style storyline is a welcome throwback to the days before Pixar tore up the rulebook. A compassionate and mature film based on classic legends rather than popular culture.
17 May18 May Sat & Sun 10.30am Grosvenor, Glasgow
The Bank Job
Date Location
Roger 'Cocktail' Donaldson's low-key thriller uses the purportedly true story of a 70s heist, with Stratham as used-car dealer Terry, whose clean getaway is impeded by Jamaican drug-lords, seedy pornographer Lew Vogel (David Suchet) and British establishment lackey Miles Urquhart (Peter Bowles). The tension mounts but with slack scripting and a descent into cliché, the film ultimately plays out as a frustratingly lightweight game of cops and robbers.

Bee Movie
Date Location
Barry B Benson graduates from college to find that he still only has one possible career: making honey. Disillusioned, he moves to Manhattan where he discovers that humans steal and eat honey and resolves to file a lawsuit against the honey giant, Big Honey. An oddly conceived vehicle for a reluctant star, 'Bee Movie' deserves a B-minus for effort.

Beetlejuice
Date Location
Recently deceased and very charming New England couple have difficulty in adjusting to the afterlife. Not the least of their worries is the tasteless refurbishment of their old home by a nasty New York yuppie family, and they eventually call on freelance bio-exorcist Betelgeuse (pronounced 'Beetle-juice') to deal with the problem in his own inimitable fashion. A movie of exuberantly eccentric cartoonish capers, which creates its own comic cosmos where the unexpected is the norm. Great fun it…

The Bucket List
Date Location
Ideally cast as filthy rich old codger Edward Cole, Nicholson and his fellow patient Carter Chambers (Freeman) find themselves diagnosed with terminal cancer, and decide to go out with a bang rather than a whimper, working their way through a 'bucket list' of male-bonding activities. Justin Zackham's script runs through the possibilities mechanically, but Reiner's film derives its power from Nicholson's let-it-all-hang-out performance for an indulgent greatest hits reprise.
19 May Mon 2.30 Cineworld Falkirk, Falkirk
Caramel
Date Location
Charming, bitter-sweet debut feature from writer-director Labaki that centres upon the 'Si Belle' beauty parlour in the Lebanese capital and the dramas of the female clientele. The film is impressively acted by a mostly non-professional cast. While there are no references to the on-going strife in Lebanon, this is still a political film, and a tender tribute to female solidarity.

Charlie Bartlett
Date Location
Charlie's a joker who manufactures fake IDs and deals his prescribed anti-depression drugs to his classmates, craving popularity to compensate for a fractured family life. Whilst robbed of any wider social resonance, this is an amusing enough take on the agonies of youth, and 'Charlie Bartlett' deserves a B+ for effort.

Charlotte's Web
Date Location
Chirpy tot Fern (Fanning) rescues Wilbur the pig from a cruel farmyard fate for lovable arachnid Charlotte to eventually save the day in a bittersweet finale that touches on practical matters of life and death. Somewhere between the cutesy 'Babe' and Orwell's political 'Animal Farm' it should draw in children and nostalgic adults alike.

Children of Glory
Date Location
Old-fashioned, melodramatic account of the 50th anniversary of the doomed Hungarian uprising against Soviet rule in 1956, which privileges action and spectacle over analysis and moral ambiguity and is at its best in its visual recreation of the attempted revolution.

Daddy Day Camp

Unloveable sequel to the equally unlovable 'Daddy Day Care' which hails a new low in Gooding's career. Crude and sentimental, the film relies on bodily-fluid gags that fall well short of the barely-raised bar established by kiddie pratfall comedies such as 'Cheaper by the Dozen'.
