The Devil Wears Prada
Date Location
Nice, twee wannabee journalist Andy (Hathaway) finds herself employed as one of two personal secretaries to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Streep), an Anna Wintour style fashion editor. With killer one lines, really well rounded characterisation and excellent performances, it's difficult not to fall for its myriad charms. Though formulaic, in terms of decent mainstream US films this year, this enjoyably innocuous, bitchy romp, may be as good as it gets.
25 Jul26 Jul Fri & Sat 11.00 Grosvenor, Glasgow
Jaws
Date Location
Cracking shark adventure from the days when Spielberg movies were scary. See the citizens of Amity scream! Watch the bodycount pile up! Hear the authorities declare the water perfectly safe!
26 Jul27 Jul Sat 8.30; Sun 5.00 Eden Court Theatre, Inverness
The Page Turner (La Tourneuse de Pages)
Date Location
A thriller set in the rarefied world of classical music. After Melanie's (François) childhood audition is thwarted by famous pianist Ariane (Frot), she seeks payback in this cleverly understated revenge drama from French writer-director Dercourt. When the violence comes, it's all the more memorable for the lack of bloodshed.
25 Jul31 Jul 12.45; Tue 12.30 Cameo, Edinburgh
Point Blank
Date Location
Revenge-ridden Marvin is bent on justifying his dreamlike existence and turning the tables on the mysterious criminal organisation which employed him in this tense, well crafted thriller that boasts an imaginitive and influential treatment of time. Boorman's impressive first American feature is made memorable by Marvin's brilliant portrayal of an outmoded gunman confusedly taking on a world overrun by technology.
26 Jul Sat 9.00 Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee
Sex and the City: The Movie
Date Location
A few years on from packing away the series, the characters are back and fleshed out, the individual angst of each woman realised enough to engage even the hardened cynics. Like life however, the film isn't perfect, the beginning recap is clumsy, the ending is rushed, and the version of feminist power and female solidarity the film peddles is slightly simplistic.
