Faclan: The Hebridean Book Festival

This book fest on Britain's Western cusp is lucky enough to call An Lanntair (Gaelic for 'the lantern') arts centre in Stornoway home. Now in its eighth year, it has moved to the cusp of winter, and this year dwells on ideas of belief, exploring the stories, legends, premonitions, beliefs shared and traded round the hearths of generations of Gaels.

North Berwick's multi-arts festival is intended as a less intense arm of Edinburgh's August extravaganza. Scottish International Storytelling Festival

The 2012 edition of the festival that began as a celebration of oral folk tale traditions continues to spread its influence across the country, with many events taking place far from the festival's spiritual home at the Scottish Storytelling Centre. Inspiration this year comes from European folklore, in particular the tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Solas Festival
