East Neuk Festival

An appreciation of classical music, excellence in writing and visual art, held in the scenic East Neuk of Fife. Visitors can expect to find musicians both local and international in attendance, including this year the Hagen Quartet, the Leipzig String Quartet and various ensembles from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, while the wordy strand includes nature writer Richard Mabey, poet Tom Pow and novelist Andrew Greig.

Faclan: The Hebridean Book Festival

This book fest on Britain's Western cusp is lucky enough to call An Lanntair (Gaelic for 'the lantern') arts centre in Stornoway home. Now in its eighth year, it has moved to the cusp of winter, and this year dwells on ideas of belief, exploring the stories, legends, premonitions, beliefs shared and traded round the hearths of generations of Gaels.

Linlithgow Book Festival

Small, volunteer-run literary festival that manages to pull in an impressive roster of guests - 2011 featured Christopher Brookmyre, Janice Galloway, James Robertson and Tam Dalyell. There's a slight lean towards history and crime fiction, but this sits comfortably alongside poetry, open mic, discussion and family events.

McLellan Arts Festival

Inspired by Scottish playwright Robert McLellan, this festival celebrates up and coming Scottish writing talent across all genres. As well as performances of some of McLellan's own pieces, there will also be performances of original works of theatre, poetry, music and filmmaking, as well as the country's only competition for play-writing in a living Scottish dialect.

St Monans Community Arts Festival

Community-led festival exploring the arts with relation to the cultural background of the village St Monans. Children and families are welcome to take part in theatre productions and workshops, while private houses are opened up as venues for art exhibitions. There are choral, jazz, chamber and folk music events, a ceilidh and a strong emphasis on promoting the creative endeavours of those within the community – local poet Gordon Meade has been a guest in years past.
