Mild-mannered schoolteacher Mason's personality is transformed when the drug he is routinely prescribed turns him into an addicted megalomaniac. Director Ray concentrates on the trappings of suburbia that stand around his central character and also contribute to the breakdown. A classic melodrama with a sharp social eye and great filmmaking skill, much deserving of contemporary reassessment.
