This five-day summer school aims to inspire young people between the ages of 13 and 17 who have a passion for Scottish traditional music and who wish to enhance their current performance skills.
This course is suited to traditional musicians interested in building their existing experience as both a solo and ensemble musician. Participants will work alongside Royal Conservatoire staff and BA Scottish Music students, therefore making it an excellent pathway to further training.
By the end of the course students should have:
Enhanced and refined existing performance skills
Explored various aspects of Scotland’s current traditional music scene
Worked with Conservatoire staff and students who work as professional musicians
Taken part in a specially commissioned concert showcasing the week’s work
Aspiring traditional musicians will spend each morning in group lessons on their main instruments, taught by the principal study staff of the Royal Conservatoire’s Scottish Music programme. This will be interspersed with dedicated personal practice time supervised by senior BA Scottish Music students.
Each afternoon will begin with a mini-masterclass on aspects of Scotland’s current traditional music scene for practicing musicians, including traditional-idiom composition, group work, studio sound production and professional stage planning.
The remainder of each afternoon will be spent in intensive group work tutorials to complete and rehearse a range of compositions specifically commissioned for the week’s culminating performance.
There will also be opportunities to join some of the Royal Conservatoire’s BA Scottish Music students and staff at informal traditional music jam sessions. A guaranteed highlight of the week will be the Tutor’s Concert, which is a great opportunity for participants to sit back and enjoy a concert given by the course tutors in the Jack Bruce Space at the Conservatoire.
