A fantastic, five-day summer school designed for people aged 17+, exploring dance for film and creating choreography for camera.

Dance film is a wonderful way to explore choreography from a completely different point of view. During this practical course, students will learn how to create choreography through a number of different techniques, for on and off camera. The course is open to everyone, although previous dance experience would be beneficial.

Students will have the opportunity to work individually and in groups, and will be guided through an exciting and rewarding experience that stretches their own abilities.

By the end of this intensive short course, students should have:

  • Strengthened their composition and choreography technique.
  • Gained an understanding of the technical production of digital film.
  • Been involved in the choreographing and making of a short dance film.
  • Deepened understanding of choreography practice.

This innovative and exciting summer school will be led by experienced dancer, choreographer and film-maker Abby Warrilow who brings with her experience of working in a wide variety of performance and film genres.

Students will work individually and in groups to explore how original dance choreography can be developed for film and equally also how to create a film capturing dance.

Students will begin each day with a dance technique class taught by Abby that will energise the students for the day ahead. The creative sessions throughout the rest of the day will explore different ways that dance material can be composed and filmed, both in studio spaces and outdoor locations in Glasgow.

Students will be encouraged to work imaginatively and be motivated to try out new ideas. Structured sequences of choreography and an element of improvised activity will be embedded into the program.

The summer school will conclude with a presentation of the work created during the week. Individual pieces and films will be presented for other students in the group followed by a structured feedback and reflection session aiming to provide ideas for development and improvement. Students will receive a copy of the films created during the week on completion of the summer school.
