Experimental film works by various artists, distorting the usual tropes of narrative and meaning.

Negativnights

Our bi-annual programme of underground experimental artist films is back!

This series brings together a selection of works in which comfortable tropes and structures of popular moving image media (film, television, internet and video games) become reconfigured and distorted. Characters, alter egos and doppelgangers seek salvation or encourage downfall in alternative narrative universes and layered realities.

This alteration and appropriation of familiar story-based concepts can create anxiety and tension in the distortion of a familiar form, explore small, subtle moments in an over-saturated visual technological culture or consider and examine the effects that this culture can have on its audience.

Each screening event is accompanied by an introduction from the curator Ross Christie and either a Q&A with the contributors or a discussion of their practice with other artists, critics or curators.

Rattray's work is an absurdist assemblage of trash culture and rudimentary internet aesthetics covering subjects as diverse as bodybuilding, heavy metal, star trek and Satanism. His practice involves the making of music and imagery under a variety of monikers (Spew Barrymore, Holy wow, Dreamguts and Yoko, Oh No!), culminating in the creation of an all-encompassing ‘mucus’ of madcap totems and distorted populist paradigms. For his screening at Negativnights Rattray will present an overview of his work in animation and video formats which will be accompanied by a Q&A and discussion about his practice.

Erica Eyres video work often uses familiar formats such as the mockumentary, video blog or motivational talk. The sense of humour running through her work hides darker themes and critiques of contemporary notions of beauty, individuality and sexual identity. Eyres will present a range of video works at Negativnights from throughout her career including new work from 2012 and will be available for a discussion and Q&A after the screening.
