Mossdale to Secret Cages

The Secret Cages are an interesting bit of birdwatching archaeology; when it was decided some years ago to reintroduce the red kite to the forest, the Cages were built in a secret location so that the young birds could grow to maturity in safety without becoming tame around humans. They were kept in cages and fed through holes in the wall until they were old enough to release. The now disused Cages are still there, and this 5km walk will take you to them, with plenty of chances to take in wildlife on the way. Waterproof clothing and stout footwear are essential and no dogs are allowed.

Booking is essential.
