Scotland's Bookshelf

Scotland's Bookshelf

The Mitchell Library is a wonderful home for Aye Write!
and when the iconic North Street building celebrated
its centenary in November 2011, it seemed a good
time to look back at Scottish writing of the last 100 years.
Mitchell librarians scoured the shelves for great Scottish
books covering this period. Then a panel – made up
of The Herald's Rosemary Goring, Karen Cunningham,
Head of Glasgow Libraries and Director of Aye Write!
and Professor Willy Maley of Glasgow University – had the unenviable task of settling on two books for each decade, to come up with 20 titles for Scotland's Bookshelf.  We think these 20 books deserve a place on every Scottish bookshelf. But what do you think? What's been missed off the list? Why are there so few women writers? How has Scottish writing changed over the century, and which current books will stand
the test of time?

Come and join the debate at a panel
discussion with authors T C Smout, William McIlvanney, Allan Massie, Janice Galloway and chair of the judges Rosemary Goring.
