Edinburgh Studio Opera: Handel's Semele
Semele was the mother of Dionysus and one of Zeus' many mistresses. Her affair with the Boss God came to an end when, prompted by jealous Hera, Semele asked Zeus to prove he was really a god. He reluctantly revealed himself in his all high-voltage divinity, causing Semele to be incinerated. No wonder the lord of Olympus had so many intimacy issues. (Dionysus later rescued Semele from Hades and made her his manager.) Michael Richardson directs Handel's increasingly popular 1743 opera.
