A Drunk Woman Looks at the Thistle: Karen Dunbar

Written by crime novelist Denise Mina as a response to Hugh MacDiarmid's seminal 1926 poem A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle, this one-woman drama offers an entertaining and compelling look at the idea of national identity. The play, performed by Chewin' the Fat star Karen Dunbar – hugely popular as a television comedian but also acclaimed as a serious actor – was previously produced at Glasgow's Oran Mor and won four star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe. Can the cultural slate be wiped clean? Should Scotland abandon its self-definitions? Karen Dunbar's character challenges with wit, eloquence and powerful rhyming monologue in this entertaining play. Note: contains very strong language. Ages 16+. Part of StAnza: Scotland's International Poetry Festival.
