Music Nation: A Sporting Fanfare

Music Nation: A Sporting Fanfare

A spectacular array of sport-associated music, from Williams' Olympic Fanfare to Vangelis' Chariots of Fire theme, via the Bolero from Ravel that remains instantly evocative of Torvill and Dean's figure-skating triumph, 28 years after the event. Performed by the BBC SSO with Nicola Benedetti and many special guests.

Music Nation: A Sporting Fanfare

A spectacular celebration of sport and music for the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics. Featuring Scottish musical and sporting stars of today and tomorrow.

Join celebrated Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its world renowned conductor Donald Runnicles for a spectacular concert on the banks of the Clyde to celebrate the 2012 Olympics. This is an evening to celebrate the uplifting power of classical music and sporting prowess by bringing together world class performers and the best of the country’s young musicians and singers with inspirational tales from some of Scotland's top sports stars.

The concert includes John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare, Vangelis’s theme from Chariots of Fire, Ravel’s Bolero - forever associated with Torvill and Dean’s Olympic triumph in 1984 - music from Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana and the world premiere of a newly commissioned fanfare from acclaimed Scottish composer James MacMillan.

Performing alongside the BBC SSO, Donald Runnicles and Nicola Benedetti will be the National Youth Choir of Scotland, members of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and young people from the Big Noise project in Stirling’s Raploch Estate.

This performance is part of Music Nation - a weekend of nationwide live music devised and led by the BBC - and is a countdown event for the London 2012 Festival.
