Wemyss & Other Wares – A Celebration of Kirkcaldy's Pottery

Wemyss and Other Wares is an exciting student exhibition created by the Museum and Gallery Studies postgraduate students at the University of St Andrews.

The exhibition is a celebration of a number of potteries that produced ceramics and many other wares in the Kirkcaldy region from 1714 up until the 1930s. These included the Kirkcaldy Pottery, Sinclairtown Pottery, Rosslyn Pottery and the Fife Pottery. The Fife Pottery is noted because of its production of the famous Wemyss Ware, which it greatly valued in the modern day and is a known favourite of the Royal family.

The exhibition will show off the beautiful ceramics and other creations of these fascinating potteries as well as educating the public on the techniques and practices of the potteries themselves. Additionally the social history side to the potteries will be shown – how the worker's lives were and the conditions they lived in.

During the course of the exhibition there are several workshops and seminars – for children and adults alike. Workshops for children will include face painting, painting pots and talks aimed at educating young people about the potteries as well as having fun at the same time. Seminars aimed at older audiences will include demonstrations of ‘throwing’ clay to make pots, and talks by pottery experts as well as ourselves, the students of St Andrews.

The exhibition will be a beautiful display of the wares of the forgotten Kirkcaldy potteries as well as a fun and exciting learning experience for all the family.
