Now entering its 32nd year, this internationally renowned festival - the most northerly folk festival in the UK - continues to host eclectic line-ups of folk, blues, jazz and swing. It's famous for showcasing Shetland musicianship, especially the unique fiddle tradition. It was named event of the year at the MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010, and last year's programme included The Wilders and Pokey LaFarge & the South City Three, and young Scots Breabach.
Shetland Folk Festival
The Shetland Folk Festival is the UK's most northerly folk festival and offers heady mixture of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer. Organised by volunteers, the festival reaches out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland with concerts organised throughout the isles. For Shetland Folk Festival Society members, there is a Festival Club in Shetland's capital, Lerwick, where you'll find formal and informal concerts, workshops, a real ale bar and fantastic 'sessions' that continue into the wee hours.
There are fantastic events and exhibitions happening all over the country during the Year of Creative Scotland. Look out for exciting new initiatives to complement a fantastic and enhanced, year-round cultural programme that shows off our creativity at its best – contemporary, international and reflecting the joy that a vibrant cultural life brings to our communities.
