Squeeze, Paul Heaton

One of the premier exponents of intelligent and witty pop, South London's Squeeze have been around in some form or another since their formation in 1973. With their string of hit singles and albums, the band have had a strong influence over subsequent artists with the likes of Kasabian and Lily Allen, The Feeling and Razorlight being enthusiastic fans. Their urban origins can be heard in the lyrics of songs such as Up The Junction and Cool For Cats but their more sensitive side is revealed in Is That Love and Labelled With Love. There have been break-ups and reformations along the way, plus changes in personnel but the bedrock of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook have remained to steer the ship and, more importantly be the writers of their acclaimed material. Each have released solo albums and participated in side projects over the years, however Squeeze itself has been the main part of their careers. Back as a working unit since 2007 they continue to tour and write new material. The Ivor Novello for Outstanding Contribution to British Music and Nordoff-Robbins Icon Awards may have come their way and even a prestigious Blue Plaque for the site of their first gig but they will always be an East Side Story.
