The SFO is a traditional fiddle orchestra, with fiddles, cellos, basses, flutes, accorions, piano and percussion. It plays a mix of arrangements of traditional tunes, and more recent compositions. Most of its music was written or arranged by the late John Mason, perhaps best known in folk clubs for his slow airs including "Lament for the Death of the Rev Archie Beaton", and "The Flower of Portencross". John's compositions also include jigs and reels, tone poems, and pieces for orchestra and Pipe Band. The concert in Gateshead will feature several of these items played by the orchestra for which they were written, including "Rose of Galloway" with the Pipe Band, and the first performances of two slow airs by John, as well as songs and dances. It's a show for fans of Scottish fiddle music. With 100 performers it'll be a lively evening.
