Antony Gormley: Flare II

Geometric shapes created by the renowned sculptor suspended from the Cathedral's spiral staircase. These sculptures aim to react with the already striking surroundings of St Paul's Cathedral. Anyone who is familiar with the Angel Of The North will have heard of Gormley whether they realise it or not. In 1994 Gormley won the Turner Prize and the South Bank Prize For Visual Art in 1999. In previous years works including Another Place, have created a great deal of controversy. This was the much-debated installation of cast iron figures that were placed along the shoreline at Crosby Beach in Liverpool. Local council officials argued at the time that this was destroying the landscape, echoing previous outrage expressed about the Angel Of The North. This latest installation appears to be more neutral and distinctly aims to work with the surroundings rather than stand out. However, there are those who see Gormley as one of the great visionaries of our time and, much like his recent sculpture in Trafalgar Square, his geometric shapes are sure to draw large crowds to an already frequented landmark.

We don't have details of any future performances, if you know of some please let us know.
