It is said that the applause after the premiere of Shostakovich's 'Symphony No 5' was longer than the symphony itself. Having been publicly denounced by the Stalinist regime for his Fourth, the significance of the symphony to Shostakovich's career, and even his life, was enormous. Presenter Paul Rissmann, conductor Stéphane Denève and the RSNO explore this great work.
