Inverness
Inverness is the capital of the Highlands and absolutely the city to head for if you crave outdoor life. It's an excellent base for a huge range of fresh air pursuits – from watching dolphins in the Moray Firth and larking about in Loch Insh Watersports to doing the river walk at Ness Islands, walking the Great Glen Way or popping over to Loch Ness. And anyone who likes Shakespeare really needs to make a pilgrimage to the 600-year-old Cawdor Castle. The Inverness area is particularly rich in historical finds: you can visit the Culloden Battlefield and explore the many intriguing castles within half an hour of the city. And for a proper Scottish knees-up, head for Hootananny, the famously lively traditional music-venue.
