Edinburgh-based Chris Bradley’s biography is an impressive read, all tales of musical scholarships, first class honours studying Music at Newcastle University and – most memorably – forming Ukrainian folk groups in Kiev. But then, who likes a swot? In the case of the recently inaugurated member of Edinburgh indie-poppers Aberfeldy however, it’s hard not to.
The construction of Bradley’s songs is their chief selling point, all lightly-picked guitars and Byrdsian melodies, but he’s also in possession of a fine James Taylor vocal that’s just shy of a falsetto. That’s the main trouble with this entirely pleasant album, though, sometimes the mix concentrates on the voice to the exclusion of the music.
