YOUNG PEOPLE’S EVENT

This year’s LGBT Youth Scotland National Gathering, ‘In Control, Your Life. Your Choices’, is a Scotland-wide event for LGBT young people up to the age of 26, their friends and families, which provides a much-needed opportunity for participants to receive advice and information to help them make informed choices about their lives.

Fergus McMillan, acting chief executive, of LGBT Youth Scotland says of the event: ‘The weekend is about creating the space and time for LGBT young people to discuss and get more information on the issues which matter to them, while also having the chance to enjoy themselves, meet new friends and relax in a safe environment.’

The two-day programme includes workshops dealing with issues relevant to the lives of LGBT young people, including relationship issues, challenging homophobia and building self-confidence, as well as a number of fun activities such as professional hairstyling, scavenger hunts, a chillout space and evening entertainment, including a ceilidh and disco. Places are free for young people, with travel and accommodation provided.

As McMillan points out, the National Gathering is a great example of the work carried out at LGBT Youth Scotland, which provides a range of services and opportunities in order to increase awareness and confidence, in turn reducing isolation and intolerance. ‘We work on behalf of LGBT young people to provide them with the support, information and advice they need, making sure their voice is heard by the rest of Scotland’s community.’
