Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art chief quits

Richard Calvocoressi, director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, is leaving to become director of the Henry Moore Foundation.

Calvocoressi, who has been in charge at the SNGMA since 1987, will take up the new role in Perry Green, Hertfordshire, in April or May next year. He replaces Tim Llewellyn, who is resigning.

The Henry Moore Foundation holds the largest collection of work by the sculptor in the world.

John Leighton, director-general of the Natonal Galleries of Scotland, said: ‘Under Richard Calvocoressi's leadership, the SNGMA has developed into one of Europe's finest galleries for modern and contemporary art. With an inspired programme of acquisitions, publications and ground-breaking exhibitions, Richard has helped to raise the ambitions for modern art in Edinburgh and in Scotland. We will miss him greatly but we are extremely proud that he is going on to such a prestigious position at the head of the Henry Moore Foundation.’
