ROMANTIC COMEDY
Tom (former teen heartthrob Patrick Dempsey) is a wealthy New York City playboy. Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) is Tom’s best friend and the single constant female companion in the life of a serial shagger. But when Hannah is wooed into marriage by dashing stranger Colin (Kevin McKidd), Tom realises she’s the girl for him. So when Hannah asks her best pal to be her maid of honour, Tom uses the initially embarrassing wedding arrangement as an opportunity to win back the love of his life.
So far so predictable a ménage a trios-driven rom-com. When Hannah announces the nuptials will be taking place in her fiancé’s home country, however, the film takes a detour to Scotland for its romantic finale. There, Tom and Hannah are – along with the film’s audience – subjected to all manner of cultural stereotyping: kilts and castles, whisky and thistles, incomprehensible accents and bagpipes, and even the Highland Games. What proves the undoing of strapping, old moneyed Colin McMurray is not just Tom and Hannah’s heartfelt but unrequited love but also his traditional and barbaric Scots ways. Groan.
Still, likeable performances from Dempsey and Monaghan go some way (though not quite far enough) to rescuing this Made of Honour.
General release from Fri 2 May.

| Tom (Dempsey) is a wealthy New York City playboy who only realises his best friend Hannah (Monaghan) is the love of his life when she plans to marry dashing stranger Colin (McKidd). Predictable 'ménage a trois' rom-com, which relocates to Scotland for some cultural stereotyping. | |
