Do you like scary movies? Fancy watching one on the internet? Beware! The shaky camcorder techniques of video pirates can make the latest Hollywood blockbuster look as scrambled as Cloverfield. So, rather than pick a fight with the copyright-lawman, why not delve into the weird and wonderful world of public domain? Older films, or ones that, for one reason or another, haven’t had their copyright renewed are available in pristine digital prints, free to watch on your home computer.

So let’s start with the classics. Check out Carl Theodor Dreyer’s misty, foggy but supernaturally atmospheric 1932 Vampyr or Bela Lugosi in the original zombie flick White Zombie. You can travel even further back to the silent days with the original vampire action on show in FW Murnau’s Nosferatu, or sample the expressionistic delights of Robert Wiene’s multi influential The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.

Coming up to date, there’s classic B Movies like 1962’s unsettling gem Carnival of Souls, the original Night of the Living Dead, Jack Nicholson and Boris Karloff in The Terror, pictured, or even bizarre political satire on the Watergate-era White House in The Werewolf of Washington.

Public domain cinema is a wide open field, with new films added every day; but do yourself a favour and check out Conrad Veidt’s barnstorming performance in touching German melodrama The Man Who Laughs. If you want to see where the inspiration came from for the ghoulish appearance of the Joker in the Batman comics and films, the bizarre appearance of hero Gwynplaine should leave you with a creepy smile on your face for days.
