PSYCHEDELIC SOUL
It’s always nice to hear that promoters – some of them at least – don’t just book guests because they hear tills ringing in their ears. ‘I’ve always been a fan of Teenage Fanclub,’ says Modern Lovers’ Craig Jamieson of the fact that he’s persuaded the band’s Norman Blake and Gerry Love to do a rare joint DJing slot at his club. ‘You’re always interested to hear what your heroes are into, so I’m looking forward to hearing which of their influences come through myself.’
Lots of Big Star and Byrds, we might presume? ‘Well, Gerry [who has played the club before while Norman is making his debut] and I are both big Northern Soul fans, and that affinity makes them just right for us.’ Well, that and the fact that the Fannies are obviously scholars of certain musical genres. After all, Modern Lovers’ particular mix of soul, psych, garage and more gives it one of the most distinctive personalities of any club in the ‘Burgh.
Not that the club has slipped into an easy comfort zone, even at the age of seven-and-a-half. After spending almost all of its life downstairs at Ego the club moved to the GRV at the start of this year. ‘I first saw the place when I went to a mate’s exhibition there,’ says Jamieson, ‘and I knew it would give us so many more opportunities, having two rooms and the added atmosphere of an art space. Plus it had been soundproofed, which is all it needed to turn it into a really nice venue.’
