Tapa Coffee & Bakehouse

21 Whitehill Street, Dennistoun, Glasgow
0141 554 9981, www.tapabakehouse.co.uk

The hand-made, traditional ethos of this artisanal bakery, café and coffee roasterie has won it fans across the city despite the unfashionable location. Snap up organic bread and cakes, or stick around for breakfast, soup or aromatic spicy chickpea, spinach and potato curry in the cheerful café.

Manna House

22-24 Easter Road, Edinburgh
0131 652 2349, www.manna-house-edinburgh.co.uk

Still a relatively undiscovered gem, this little French-style bakery-café sells excellent and well priced freshly baked artisan bread as well as sandwiches, soup, quiches and tarts, all available to eat in or take away. They also do some glorious sweet treats.

Heart Buchanan

380 Byres Road, Glasgow,
0141 334 7626, www.heartbuchanan.co.uk

A West End deli that was bursting at the seams for long enough, when Fiona Buchanan acquired the shop next door she immediately set about installing bread ovens. Fresh bread is baked here once or twice a week, supplemented by loaves and patisserie from artisan suppliers. They do baking classes too.
