SURF POST-PUNK POP
‘I look at you and I’m ready to pump,’ declares the very first lyric of Funplex. Smutty, puerile, silly or all of the above, it makes at least one thing instantly clear: The B-52s are back.
It’s 16 years since Athens Georgia’s second most famous band (REM, save yourself a Google) released a studio LP, but they’ve aged well. New Order/KT Tunstall producer Steve Osborne brings requisite 21st century slickness. The rest is all the band’s doing: ‘loud, sexy rock and roll for your pleasure zones, with the beat pumped up to hot pink’ as they put it. God knows modern pop needs some of that.
