Following a campaign launched last November, a World Book Day poll has revealed the top ten contemporary novels with genuine word-of-mouth appeal.

The top ten shortlist features books set during Apartheid-era South Africa, wartime England and the Partition of India and Pakistan, and includes Jonathan Trigell’s Boy A and Jenny Downham’s Before I Die.
