SNJO Plays Dizzy
The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra have consistently moved between commissioning new music and performing repertory projects like this one. Tommy Smith and his troops turn their attention to the great Dizzy Gillespie this time round. The trumpeter took the lessons he learned in the course of creating the extended musical vocabulary of bebop with Charlie Parker into the big band arena in the late 40s, seasoned with a healthy pinch of Afro-Cuban vibes, and continued to lead large ensembles until his death in 1993.
Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, Fri 24 Nov; RSAMD, Glasgow, Sat 25 Nov.
