INDIE
This London-based indie outfit are more popular across the pond, and you can see why, with the West Coast jangle of The Byrds and their ilk an obvious influence. The Clientele combine a love of simple guitar pop with a lush orchestral sound, whispery vocals and heartfelt lyrics, and while it’s all pleasant enough, singer Alasdair MacLean’s songwriting tends to lack a certain bite. As strings sweep around ‘From Brighton to Santa Monica’ and a dozen other all-too-similar tunes, the one-paced nature of proceedings leads to a (presumably unintentional) soporific effect. Accomplished enough, but somehow missing a vital, passionate spark.
