CHARITY COMPILATION
It is, of course, the very nature of compilation CDs that they are a mix of the good, the bad and the pointless. While The Cake Sale is a perfectly laudable charity collection, that doesn’t make it exempt from castigation. If anything was to define the album, it’s a general weediness: were this record to be a slice of something to go with a cuppa, it would be a sugar-free angel cake.
The good points, though, are highly commendable, with the still amazing Nina Persson displaying a vocal beauty on ‘Black Winged Bird’ which would bring tears to the sternest of warlords while Neil Hannon goes cosmic with ‘Aliens’.
