Ire Works (Relapse)
METAL
Having written the definitive math-metal album with 1999’s Calculating Infinity debut, DEP have faced incessant criticism from a select few for daring to expand the sonic palette.
Ire Works looks set to provoke further, um, ire as the New Jersey shredders delve into electronica, alterna-rock and textured pop. It’s like Kid606 and Faith No More were locked in the studio and weren’t allowed out until they brought something new to the table.
Sure they can still peel faces at 50 paces but what’s most astonishing is how they’ve inherited FNM’s ability to turn their hand to whatever they damn please. And if that’s not a sign of greatness we don’t know what is.
