Nomadic-inspired novel wins book prize
A Chinese author who wrote about his 11 years living with nomadic communities in Mongolia has scooped a major prize which honours literature that has not yet published in English.
Jiang Rong won the $10,000 Man Asian Literary Prize for his novel Wolf Totem, but claimed he had only hoped to produce ‘an appealing story’.
The 61-year-old was unable to attend the prize ceremony in Hong Kong due to illness.
One of the judges and a former governor general of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson, said of the novel: ‘The slowly developed narrative is rendered in vivid detail and has a powerful cumulative effect.’
An English version of Wolf Totem is expected in March next year.
