Tributes pour in for US author Mailer

Tributes have poured in for two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Norman Mailer, who died on Saturday aged 84.

The controversial writer was candid in his views of US politics - in particular the wars in Vietnam and Iraq - and wrote dozens of books, plays, poems and essays.

Mailer won the Pulitzer Prize twice: for The Armies of the Night in 1968 and The Executioner’s Song in 1979.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said: ‘It is a giant of American literature who has disappeared.’

Married six times with nine children, Mailer was famed for enraging the feminist movement. He once voiced his fears that one day women would ‘take over the world’.

The president of Mailer’s publisher Random House, Gina Centrello said: ‘He was a consummate professional, who stimulated us with his passion and ideas and charmed us with his wit and warmth.’
